Museum Of Physical Culture And Sports, Sofia

100 National Tourist Sites

It shows the history of Bulgarian sports and the excellence of our native athletes. Its exposition contains over 5,000 exhibits. The museum’s funds were acquired through donations from famous Bulgarian athletes, competitors and sports figures. Among the exhibits are their personal belongings and awards – Olympic medals, cups, competition teams and awards. Football fans can see the team and captain’s armband of Georgi Asparuhov-Gundy, the sports jersey of Hristo Stoichkov, considered the greatest Bulgarian football player.

Alpinists also have their own corner. For now, there are mainly belongings of Hristo Prodanov (the first Bulgarian to set foot on Everest), as well as pike and equipment from the beginning of the 20th century. One of the last donations was from the great Bulgarian volleyball player Todor Simov – a legendary name from the late 1940s. It provides the museum with programs, medals and awards from a period when Bulgarian volleyball achieved its first successes on the international sports scene.

The museum exhibits photos and facsimiles representing the first sports associations, tourist societies, clubs and organizations. Of interest are the suitcase of our legendary wrestler Dan Kolov, as well as the rag ball sewn by Nikola Dimitrov-Futs, a football player from the 1930s. Among the relics is an old photo from 1884 of Swiss gymnastics teachers who started the modern sport in the country. The first museum exhibition was opened on March 30, 1962 and is housed in the Sports Palace. In 2003, the museum was renovated. It is located in a specially adapted hall in the “Vasil Levski” National Stadium.
