The Lily Pond is a cherished and popular location within Boris Garden in Sofia, serving as a favored meeting spot for both residents and visitors to the city. This small lake, situated at the heart of Boris Garden, has a rich and captivating history, evident through old photographs showcasing its various transformations over the years.
The pond was initially created at the end of the 19th century, around the 1880s, following the design of the gardener Daniel Neff. It was built on the site of an old swamp, and upon completion, red fish and water lilies were introduced. Due to the presence of the red fish, the lake earned the name Fish Lake, a title that persisted for many years.
Though its appearance may have evolved, the Lily Pond remains a beloved and iconic feature of Boris Garden. In proximity to the pond, there is a cluster of centuries-old summer oak trees. Together, the trees and the water from the lake contribute to keeping the surroundings cool, providing a refreshing escape, especially on warm summer days.
