Metropolitan Puppet Theater

Art & Culture

Founded in 1946 by Mara Penkova, the Metropolitan Puppet Theater emerged as a trailblazer in Bulgaria’s theatrical landscape. Initiated with meager personal funds, this pioneering theater quickly captured public attention. Within a mere two years, the troupe secured a significant milestone—a state subsidy. This marked the theater’s transition to become the first state-sponsored professional puppet theater in Bulgaria.

Over its illustrious history, the Metropolitan Puppet Theater has presented nearly 300 distinctive productions on its esteemed stage, contributing significantly to Bulgaria’s vibrant theater scene.
