The “Poetry on the Wall” initiative, launched by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sofia in 2004, represents a unique cultural endeavor that bridges poetry and public spaces. This project invites all EU member states to select a wall within Sofia’s central area to adorn with a poem in their native language, effectively turning the cityscape into a canvas for literary expression. The inaugural contribution to this project was from the Netherlands, featuring the poem “I think you are this” by Jan Halo. This piece was thoughtfully placed on the facade of Sofia’s Natural History Museum, setting a precedent for the fusion of art, literature, and urban environment, thereby enriching Sofia’s cultural landscape and fostering a deeper connection between the city’s residents and the diverse poetic traditions of the European Union.
