The Rozhen Monastery is the largest monastery in the Pirin region and one of the few medieval Bulgarian monasteries preserved relatively intact to this day. The monastery was built in the 13th century.
It is located about 5 km. from the town of Melnik in the lower parts of Pirin. It offers an exceptional view to the peaks of Pirin and Belasitsa, as well as to the popular Melniški melo – pyramidal hills located around the city, formed by erosion of clay soil. The current monastery building dates from the 19th century. The church itself is a remarkable cultural monument. The oldest inscription on the frescoes is from 1597. It has an interesting wood-carved iconostasis, frescoes and stained glass in its eastern part. There is an exhibition in the monastery building.
