100 National Tourist Sites

The Regional History Museum of Vratsa has existed since 1953, but in 1980 it was moved to the southern wing of the Palace of Culture in the city center.

One of the most valuable finds in the region is the famous Thracian treasure discovered accidentally in 1985 in a vegetable garden in the village of Rogozen.

165 vessels made of silver came to light, of which 131 were gilded. Their total weight exceeds 19 kilograms. This is the biggest treasure discovered in our country, but the museum also keeps another extremely valuable exhibit – the skeleton of a young woman, 153 centimeters tall, who lived about 8,000 years ago.

In addition to pottery from the Neolithic, the “Prehistory” hall also offers a rich exposition from the Copper and Stone Age. It is enough to mention only the collection of idol plastic, altars, tiles with cut pictograms, weapons and objects from Thracian life. No less interesting is also the hall “Antiquity and the Middle Ages”.

Here, the attention is drawn to the silver and gold objects found in the Mogilan mound in Vratsa /especially the gold laurel wreath, the silver-gilt kneeler and the exquisitely crafted vessels/. Visitors linger for a long time in front of the showcases, where preserve the silver jugs from Bukivtsi, the appliqués from Galiche and those displaying coins and ornaments made of precious metals from late antiquity and the Bulgarian Middle Ages.

Original objects and photographs illustrate the contribution of the population of Vratsa and the region to the national liberation aspirations of our people. Special attention is dedicated to the work of Hristo Botev and his squad.
