Varna Museum of Modern History

100 National Tourist Sites

The credit for the creation of the Regional Historical Museum – Varna in the distant year 1887 belongs to the tireless pioneers of Bulgarian archaeology, the brothers Karel and Herman Shkorpil. After numerous tolls, only in 1993, he finally occupied the entire building of the former Girls’ High School and in 32 rooms on an area of 2000 square meters, he unfolded part of the treasures collected over decades. In his funds are kept more than 100,000 objects found in Varna, the region and the entire Northeast Bulgaria.

It is impossible to enumerate everything, and yet here are a few examples: flint blades, arrowheads, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, an innumerable amount of ceramic vessels, the amazing finds from the Varna Eneolithic necropolis, where the amount of gold found exceeds in number and weight all the prehistoric treasures in the world of the same era, taken together, as well as the sceptres found – a sure sign that the deceased were invested with a high temporal or spiritual power.

From the time of the Thracians – bronze decorations and iron weapons, silver and gold ornaments, ceramics. From Odessos during the Hellenistic era – beautiful gold ornaments, wooden sarcophagi decorated with terracotta figures, bronze and glass vessels, bronze, silver and gold coins. From the Roman period – exquisite glass and ceramic vessels, architectural decorations, bronze and marble statues. And more – ceramics from the time of the First and Second Bulgarian kingdoms, magnificent examples of medieval goldsmithing and remarkable ceramic works.

The beginning of the Naval Museum, today one of the symbols of Varna, was established in 1885 by Russian officers in the Bulgarian service. To help create the Maritime Museum, as it was originally called, Karel Shkorpil was again involved and thus the first two-room exposition of the already mentioned Girls’ Gymnasium was created. In 1956, it was moved to its current location – in the beautiful building built in 1890 for the residence of the Italian Consul Assareto.
