The regional historical museum in Pleven is a scientific and cultural-educational institute. It carries out its activities in the search, research, presentation, preservation and popularization of cultural monuments, natural specimens,
the flora and fauna of the territory of the Pleven region.
Significant archaeological sites have been discovered in the area – the Roman city of Ulpia Eskus near the village of Gigen, the late antique and early Byzantine fortress Storgozia near Pleven, the medieval Bulgarian fortress in Nikopol.
The profile of the museum is general history with a natural science department. Its structure includes the following main specialized departments and service units: Archaeology, History of Bulgaria 15th – 19th centuries, New and recent history, Ethnography, Nature, Funds and scientific archive, Public relations, Restoration and conservation workshop, Photo lab, Library.
The museum and the museum funds are located in a representative two-story building – a cultural monument of national importance, with a total area of about 7,000 m2 and a park with an open exposition of an area of 37 decares. The main collection of the museum includes over 180,000 museum items. The specialized library of the museum has over 10,000 volumes of scientific literature and periodicals.
Since 1976, together with the museums in Vratsa, Vidin and Montana, the museum in Pleven participates in the publication of a yearbook – News of the museums in Northwestern Bulgaria, of which 27 volumes have been printed so far.
