The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Sofia stands as a testament to faith and architectural beauty. Its construction, initiated on July 12, 1929, carried on until 1933 and was finally consecrated on April 1, 1934, in the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Sofia Metropolitan Stefan, Vicar Bishop Paisii, Mayor Vladimir Vazov, Prime Minister Andrey Lyapchev, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Confessions Atanas Burov. The temple celebrates its feast day on June 29.
This architectural marvel takes the form of a cross-domed three-nave basilica, adorned with three thrones. The northern throne pays homage to Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helena, while the southern throne honors Saint Patriarch Euthymius.
Before the grandeur of the main temple stood, a small chapel under the same name marked the sacred grounds. It served as a sanctuary for divine services, even continuing its spiritual role after the construction and consecration of the main church in 1934. Over time, this chapel transformed, adopting the name “Forty Martyrs of Sevasti,” and remained a site for services until the early 1990s.
Unfortunately, despite its historical and spiritual significance, the chapel met an unfortunate fate in the 1990s, falling victim to neglect and indifference toward safeguarding these sacred spaces. Tragically, the chapel was completely destroyed and subjected to looting, marking a grievous loss for the preservation of spiritual heritage.
