Independence Square, colloquially known as Largoto, is situated in the heart of Sofia, measuring approximately 200 meters in length and 50 meters in width. The square plays a prominent role in hosting official protocol ceremonies and various public events due to its proximity to significant state buildings. Among the notable structures surrounding the square are the Council of Ministers, the Party House, the Presidency, the Ministry of Education and Science, the hotel “Balkan,” the statue of Saint Sofia, and the church “St. Petka.”
At the center of the square, an elongated opening has been excavated to unveil the Archaeological Complex “Serdika,” showcasing the remnants of the ancient fortress positioned at the level of the church in the underpass. The square’s strategic location and the presence of key institutions make it a focal point for official and public activities in the city.
