Monument to Pope John XXIII

The monument to Pope John XXIII stands adjacent to the Catholic Cathedral “Saint Joseph” in Sofia. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, also known as the Bulgarian Pope, served as the Papal Nuncio in Bulgaria from 1925 to 1935. Later, he became the 261st Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, ascending to the papacy on October 28, 1958, and remaining in office until his passing on June 3, 1963. The monument commemorates his significant role and connection to Bulgaria during his tenure as Nuncio.
