The History Museum of Sofia, situated at 1 Banski Square within the premises of the former Central Mineral Bath, officially opened its permanent exhibition on September 17, 2015. Boasting over 100,000 original exhibits, the museum houses a diverse collection that includes archaeological finds, coins, ornaments, ancient weapons, clothing, orders and medals, as well as items belonging to historical figures such as Tsar Ferdinand and Stefan Stambolov.
The permanent exhibition unfolds across eight halls, providing a chronological journey from the 6th millennium BC to the 1940s. These halls are themed around topics like the heritage of antiquity, the strength of the spirit, dynastic connections with Western Europe, the palace cabinet, Sofia street, state and municipal institutions, the home and clothing of Sofians, and cultural life and entertainment. In addition to these, the museum features two temporary exhibition halls.
The museum’s branches, including the underground museum at the Basilica of Saint Sofia, the tomb of Prince Alexander I, and the Exposition for National Reconciliation at the Garrison Shooting Range, further enrich the cultural offerings for visitors.
