Theater 199

Art & Culture

Theater 199 “Valentin Stoychev” carries a legacy of intimate chamber performances by contemporary authors, nestled in a unique setting.

Established on June 12, 1965, it was originally named for its 199-seat capacity, later modified to accommodate 169 spectators after several renovations. Nestled in what’s been described as a “cozy dungeon” in Sofia’s city center, this theater operates without a permanent troupe. Instead, it hosts guest creative teams, directors, and actors who bring diverse performances to its stage.

The theater boasts a diverse monthly program catering to various audiences. Evening performances for adults typically start at 7:30 p.m., with a tradition of Sunday daytime shows at 3:00 p.m. during the winter months. Additionally, weekend shows for children are held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. During summer, evening performances commence at 8:00 p.m.

The theater’s stage has hosted performances by esteemed directors and featured iconic roles played by exceptionally talented artists over the years, contributing to its rich and storied history in Sofia’s cultural scene.
