Nature Conservation Center “Poda”

100 National Tourist Sites

The Poda area, located south of Burgas, was declared a protected area in 1989 by order of the Ministry of Environment and Water. It is managed by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. It’s the floor the first protected area in Bulgaria, created at the proposal of the BDZP and provided for the management of a non-governmental organization, and over the years it has established itself as a model for sustainable nature protection, ecological education and nature-friendly tourism. 273 species of birds have been found on the territory of Poda of a little more than 1 square km, which is more than half of all 420 species found in Bulgaria in general! Therefore, in 1997, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, with the help of the Government of Switzerland, built here the first Nature Conservation Center (NCC) in Poda as a center for nature conservation, environmental education, ecotourism and ornithological information.

The Poda protected area is open to visitors all year round. In it, rare species of birds can be observed undisturbed, both from the terraces of the Nature Protection Center of the BDZP with binoculars and a telescope, and on a special route. There is a special shelter that allows observation and photography regardless of the weather conditions. Migratory bird surveys are conducted every year at the Poda WWF SAC, and the best months for observing migrants are March, April, May, August, September and October. However, interesting and rare bird species including pelicans, sea eagles, little cormorants and others can be seen at any time of the year.
