Ancient Theater, Plovdiv

100 National Tourist Sites

The most emblematic monument in the architectural-historical reserve “Old Plovdiv” still remains the famous Ancient Theater. It is believed to have been built by Marcus Aurelius Trajan at the beginning of the 2nd century / although there is also an assumption that it may have been built earlier before the Roman era, similar to the ancient Greek theaters, to serve for public celebrations and rites in honor of the god Dionysius.
