The “Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art” project, managed by the National Gallery and financed under the BG08 Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Arts program, focuses on the comprehensive reconstruction and development of the Sofia Arsenal building into a contemporary art museum.
The initial stage, concluded in 2011, involved the extensive reconstruction of the building, transforming it into a functional Museum of Contemporary Art. The architectural layout on the first floor was completed in accordance with the design by the Kadinovi Brothers architectural studio.
The second phase aims to finalize the second and attic floors of the museum, including the construction of a modern storage facility compliant with museum standards, alongside a separate building designated for temporary exhibitions.
Preserving the architectural and cultural significance of the building within the historical Sofia Arsenal complex was integral to the reconstruction process. The museum’s location within South Park on Cherni Vrah Blvd. No. 2 is aligned with contemporary “green design” principles.
As a branch of the National Gallery, the Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art has hosted nearly a hundred events since its establishment in 2011. In subsequent years, the museum has initiated new projects, fostering a vibrant cultural environment within Sofia’s artistic landscape.
