Monuments

On the wall of the 19th Secondary School “Elin Pelin” in the capital, there stands a bas-relief dedicated to the renowned geographer Felix Philip Emanuel Kanitz. Born in Pest within the Astro-Hungarian Empire, Kanitz made a significant mark on Bulgaria, undertaking eighteen visits to the country. His inaugural journey to Bulgarian soil occurred on July 11, 1860, and from 1868, he embarked on an extensive research study of the Bulgarian lands commissioned by the Vienna Aid Academy. His travels resulted in unparalleled works of historical, ethnographic, and geographical significance. The bas-relief commemorating Kanitz was installed by the Embassies of Austria and Hungary.
