Vasil Levski National Museum, Karlovo

100 National Tourist Sites

The native house of the Apostle is one of the first memorial museums in Bulgaria. For several decades, many items, documents and photographs related to the family, the life and work of Vasil Levski, his associates both from Karlovo and from other parts of the country have been collected and stored in it. Almost all scientific biographical studies and literary works dedicated to the Apostle, works of fine art are kept here. You can also see the Statute of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee, a sample of the uniform of the First Bulgarian Legion, the flag of the Karlov Revolutionary Committee and many other interesting exhibits.

In the year 2000, the museum complex included the memorial chapel “Veech Svetikh Bulgarians”, built in memory of the Apostle. It keeps a priceless memory – part of his hair. Their history is interesting. The Apostle himself cut his hair and took off his monastic robe. Easter 1864 in the area of Alton Chair, on the outskirts of Karlovo and gave it to his mother with the promise to keep it.

Everyone who visits this house inevitably finds himself in the grip of emotion and bows before this simultaneously intelligent and at the same time down-to-earth Bulgarian – the only compatriot of ours, to whom we cannot point out “faults”, because the Apostle proved with his whole life the words : “I have devoted myself to my Fatherland, to serve it to the death and to work according to the will of the people.” There were many disputes and a long search was made for his grave. It was not found, but each of us knows where he is – there, on the highest peak in the history of Bulgaria.
