100 National Tourist Sites

It is assumed that the town of Tryavna arose in the second half of the 12th century, when it was called Tarnava. But the earliest document about the existence of the settlement is from 1565. During the Turkish slavery, the population enjoyed with certain privileges because it was obliged to guard the passages. However, the land was small and infertile, which contributed to the rapid development of crafts. The inhabitants of Tryavna turned out to be excellent carpenters and icon painters, but they were most famous for their ability to carve wood.

When you visit it, you will see for yourself that the enchantment oozes from this so-called small town, especially from its old part, declared an architectural reserve with about 400 preserved monuments from the Renaissance, with the square, the clock tower and the “hunchback bridge”. the stalls and in the church “St. Archangel Michael”, built in the 12th century.

The specialized museum of carving and ethnographic art is in the famous Daskalova House – a wonderful example of the Renaissance and, in particular, of the Trevna school of architecture. It is on two floors with a high and spacious veranda protected by a wide overhang. The house is surrounded by a high stone wall with battlements. It somewhat resembles a small fortress – something absolutely necessary in those troubled times, when the marauding gangs of Kardzhaliya and Daaliya roamed around. More than 5,000 exhibits are exhibited in the halls of the house.

With numerous photographs and original works, the masterpieces of the Trevna art school in carving and painting are shown. To this day, the names of Usta Dimitar and Usta Gencho – famous carpenters, the carvers Dimitar Oshanetsa and Ivan Bochukovetsa, as well as the representatives of the six painting families – are still remembered. Therefore, when you find yourself there, do not miss to see the interesting collection of tools, materials and works of the country’s richest painting family – the Minevska family.

You should not miss the collection of works by the self-made master Gencho Marangozov – also carvings and wooden sculptures in Bulgarian historical figures: khans, kings, revivalists. The Daska house is also known for other important events: it was in it that Vasil Levski and Angel Kanchev founded the local secret revolutionary committee, and Apostola slept in the “written” room. The headquarters of the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish war of liberation.

But it is most famous after the famous bet that Dimitar Oshanetsa and his journeyman Ivan Bochukovetsa concluded, namely who will make a more beautiful ceiling in the newly built house of the wealthy Trevna merchant on gyul and silk, Hadji Hristo Daskalov. They worked for six months – from St. George’s Day to Dimitrov’s Day, and the day came when the people of the guild had to decide who was the best.

They first entered the room where the young journeyman worked and gasped: a beautiful July sun was shining from the ceiling – and everyone recognized his mastery. But when they found themselves in the room where his teacher was working, they couldn’t take their eyes off the ceiling, because his creation was even more perfect.

Then they justly judged: “The skill of Ivan Bochukovetsa is recognized, but the master is Usta Dimitar…”
