Salt Museum, Pomorie

100 National Tourist Sites

In Pomorie, the ancient Anchialo, sea salt has been mined since time immemorial. According to Bulgarian historians, the salt pans existed even before the founding of the city – around the 5th century BC. Until the 1930s, sea salt in Bulgaria
it was mined only in Pomorie.

In the past, salt was rare and in some places had the value of gold. Therefore, the Anchial salt pans were the subject of disputes and wars. The museum in Pomorie is the only museum in Bulgaria and the Balkans specialized in the production of salt by solar evaporation of seawater. It was opened on September 7, 2002. It was created with the financial support of the European Union through the “Far” program. Located in the old town area. The museum presents the ancient Anchia technology for the production of sea salt. It consists of an exhibition hall and 25 decares of operating saltworks. It has a unique collection of photographs from the turn of the last century, old topographical maps, models and authentic solar equipment and tools. The museum’s saltworks produce salt in the same way as it was done in ancient times. Visitors can see “live” all the technological operations, talk to the solar workers, feel the authentic atmosphere of the past.
