At the beginning of the 18th century, one of the Bulgarian spiritual centers was Gabrovo. It became the cradle of Bulgarian secular education. Here, on January 2, 1835, the First Bulgarian Secular School was opened, and those created for its needs were the first
textbooks, aids and supplies, are perceived as a standard by the later Bulgarian schools. Since 1872, the Gabrovo school has grown into the first comprehensive high school in Bulgaria. From 1889, it took the name of its benefactor Vasil Aprilov and was called Aprilov High School.
In 1974, the National Museum of Education was established, which is housed in the historical building of Aprilov High School, declared a cultural monument.
