Karlovo History Museum

100 National Tourist Sites

The historical museum in the town of Karlovo has more than a hundred years of history. It is located in the Historical Zone “Old Karlovo” – an ensemble cultural monument, in which some of the most valuable Renaissance houses and courtyards have been preserved.

The building in which it is housed was built in 1871. It is one of the most representative architectural monuments in the city from the era of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The exposition is located on an area of 800 square meters and traces the history of Karlovo and part of the Karlovo region. The archaeological heritage of the Strem valley from the prehistoric, ancient and medieval eras is presented. The exposition presents some of the numerous crafts that developed here: coppersmithing, leatherworking, goldsmithing, etc. A special place is devoted to the most well-developed crafts during the Renaissance – pipework and rose production.

Very attractive are the kuker costumes on display, related to the traditional kuker games for Karlovo. The development of the educational work and the literary activity of a number of Karlovian educators has been traced.

With many documents and original weapons, the participation of the Bulgarians from Karlovo in the national liberation movement during the Renaissance and the dramatic events during the Russian-Turkish liberation war in 1877 – 1878 is presented.
Here, every visitor can learn about the first decades of the history of Karlovo after the Liberation, as well as the work of the Karlovo donors, the brothers Evlogii and Hristo Georgievi, Pulievi, Lazarovi, etc.

The museum also has an ethnographic exhibition “Mazakova Kashta” and an exhibition in the house of Daskal Botjo Petkov (for visits to it, a prior request must be made to the Historical Museum). The museum offers a walking tour of the city along tourist routes with included cultural, historical and natural attractions with a tour guide.
