100 National Tourist Sites

From the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman slavery until the end of the 20th century, our country has lost many talented poets for various reasons.

One of them, often called “the poet with the quilt”, is Peño Penev. He was not born here, but in a village Dobromirka, Sevlievsko, where he apparently had a childhood that could not be called happy. This, as well as the failures of his married life, the perennial problems caused by informers, and the lack of prospects, are probably the causes of his melancholy. Peño Penev arrived in Dimitrovgrad in 1949, where he spent his best years and became the great poet Peño Penev.

On April 27, 1959 , he committed suicide, but the people of Dimitrovgrad not only do not forget him, but created his home-museum opposite the station. The small room in which he lived and worked has been preserved. There is also a small exhibition of photographs, memories, paintings, poems and portraits painted by his son Vladimir Penev.
