There is hardly any other Bulgarian city surrounded by so many legends as Belogradchik. There are two must-sees here: the remarkable history museum and the extravaganza of fantastic rock formations that cover an area 30 and 15 kilometers wide. As you know, they were nominated for one of the new seven wonders of nature.
The historical museum is housed in the Panova house – an architectural gem from the Renaissance. It introduces visitors mainly to the socio-economic development of the city and the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibited exhibits, as well as the two graphics of the Austro-Hungarian traveler Felix Kanitz, give a good idea of how they once looked, as well as what were the main livelihoods and crafts. Attention is also drawn to the rich collection of icons painted by masters from Tryavna and Debarsko. Of course, the Panova house preserves and remembers the uprising of 1850 in Northwestern Bulgaria, the Russian-Turkish war – the siege of Belogradchik, as well as the Serbian-Bulgarian conflict in 1885. The Alapidarium in the courtyard takes us back to the age of Ancient Rome.
No less interesting is the exposition from the “Nature” department of the museum. In a small area, one can see some of the most attractive representatives of living and non-living nature in this region – from past geological times to the present day.
