Zlatograd is located in the Rhodope Mountains – on the border between its central and eastern parts. The city is located in a picturesque valley. About 300 km from our capital Sofia and 70 km from the international resort center of Pamporovo
and ski center Chepelare.
From the very center of the city begins the river Varbitsa, formed by the confluence of the Golyama reka and Malka reka. Directly next to it, along the ridges of its southern hills, passes the modern Bulgarian-Greek border. Zlatograd is the southernmost Bulgarian city. It is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name.
The Zlatograd ethno-cultural area has been inhabited for millennia.
The city itself has a centuries-old history. Numerous archaeological sites and cultural monuments, surrounded by the romantic charm of folklore and traditions, testify to the ancient beginning and historical development. Over a hundred cultural monuments have been preserved to this day. From the Renaissance period, the largest compact architectural reserve in the Rhodopes has been preserved and restored. Traditional houses impress not only with their whiteness and round chimneys, but also with the peculiar combination of their architectural elements.
In the traditional spiritual culture of the Zlatograd area, the rich spirituality of its creators is reflected, and the folklore – in all its diversity – stands out in particular. The ethnographic area complex – Zlatograd is unique with the dynamic display of the museum exposition, the demonstration of traditional labor skills; with the applied innovative approach in exhibiting the craft workshops; with its location in the middle of a district of architectural monuments of culture, inhabited all year round.
