Eastern Rhodope Nature Conservation Center

Uncategorized

Our story begins in 1988.
The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSP) is the first civil nature protection organization in the recent history of Bulgaria. Our birth date is June 3, 1988 and we already have over 30 years of history. The founders of BDZP are scientists, university professors and amateur ornithologists, driven by the desire for real actions for the protection of birds.
In 1992, the Company was accepted as the representative of Bulgaria in the oldest international organization for the protection of birds – BirdLife International. Applying a scientific approach in the protection of birds and other endangered groups of animals and plants, the BDZP established itself as a successful professionally operating organization with members and structures in the country.
In the beginning are the birds…
Since the early years of our history, we have taken practical actions to help endangered species. Feeding of vultures in the Eastern Rhodopes was organized, which grew into a comprehensive nature protection program, which led to the rescue of the griffon vulture from extinction. Its population in Bulgaria grew from a few pairs to over 100 pairs in 2020.
