Monuments

Hristo Smirnenski, a pivotal figure in Bulgarian poetry, is commemorated with a memorial plaque featuring a bas-relief on the facade of a residential building situated at “Journalist” Square.

Born on September 17, 1898, in Kukous, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time (present-day Kilkis, Greece), Smirnenski’s early years were marked by displacement. Following the destruction of his hometown, he relocated with his family to Sofia. In his early professional life, he engaged in various roles, including work as a newspaperman, reporter, and scribe.
