The National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” is the largest public library in Bulgaria and the oldest cultural institution established after Bulgaria’s liberation. Founded in 1878, it has a rich history deeply intertwined with the cultural development of the nation. Initially known as the Sofia Public Library, it quickly became the National Library in 1879. The library’s mission is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the cultural and historical heritage of Bulgaria.
The library holds an impressive collection of nearly 8.5 million documents, including manuscripts, old printed books, and numerous other valuable resources. This makes it not only a vital center for Bulgarian literature but also a significant repository of Balkan cultural artifacts. Its collections span a wide range of fields and are indispensable to researchers, scholars, and the general public.
The building, opened in 1953, stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication to preserving Bulgarian heritage, especially after the original building was destroyed during the bombings of World War II. In front of the library, a monument dedicated to the brothers Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the Slavic script, underscores the institution’s importance to Bulgarian and Slavic culture.
Declared a cultural monument in 1978, the library continues to play a crucial role in Bulgaria’s intellectual life, fostering a culture of learning and inquiry. Its extensive collections and ongoing cultural events make it a cornerstone of Bulgaria’s educational and cultural landscape.
